Rabat

Rabat is a historical city in the Northern part of Malta. It is one of the few forested areas in the country. There you can find Roman remains such as Domus Romana and St. Paul's catacombs. Domus Romana was discovered in 1881.

This site and the mosaics within it, are part of the first ever purposely-built structure on the Maltese island meant to protect an archaeological site and collections within it. Most of the Roman antiquities including the ones scattered in Mdina were transferred to the museum that opened in 1882.

Nowadays its display is designed as to allow the visitors to travel back in time and explore the various aspects of a Roman family and household.

The St Paul's Catacombs represent the earliest and largest archaeological evidence of Christianity in Malta. The catacombs form a typical complex of interconnected underground Roman cemeteries that were in use up to the 7th, and possibly the 8th centuries AD.

On the first day of our school trip we visited Rabat, the Domus Romana and we saw St. Paul's church from the outside.

Mdina

Mdina is one of Europe's finest examples of an ancient walled city and extraordinary in its mix of medieval and baroque architecture. It is also called the silent city because the city's walls make the silence really noticeable. It was home then, as now, to Malta's noble families.

Mdina is located on top of a hill, and it is visible from most areas of Malta. It is surrounded by a ditch that has been turned into a public garden. The inner streets are paved with large stones and cobbles, and there you'll often hear the sound of horse-drawn carriages taking tourists on a tour of the city.

Many buildings that were built several centuries ago have been preserved and Mdina narrow alleys remind visitors of centuries of history.

On the same day that we visited Rabat, we took a tour of Mdina. There we watched a short documentary about the Knights of Malta.

St. Julian's

St. Julian's is a residential and tourist centre, and home to some of Malta's most modern hotels. It is now an extension of Sliema although was originally a small fishing port. St. Julian's is close to Paceville, Malta's main nightlife centre where there are clubs, casinos, many restaurants and bars.

In St. Julian's you can visit interesting sites, such as Spinola Bay, Spinola Palace and the Old Parish Church. The school we attended was in St Julian's, we were divided into classes and we attended some interesting lessons.
